Friday- Quiz Day

You will have the first 10 minutes for last minute studying
We will take the quiz and correct in class
You will staple the quiz to your 3 5-question worksheets from this week (Lewis Hine, Matthew Brady, and Edweard Muybridge) and turn in

Spend the rest of the period by doing a Google image search of each artist we looked at yesterday (there were 8) and writing a summary of their work/style. Be descriptive! You will get to use these descriptions on a scavenger hunt Monday where you will be competing with other teams.

You might write down WHAT type of things the person mostly took pictures of, How old the pictures looked, were they in color, black and white, or sepia tone? Put everything in your own words so you can understand it later- it will help you!

Second, we are going to begin creating a timeline of the history of photography, which we will update throughout the first semester.  I will walk you through creating it.

Elements we are including on the timeline today: YOUR birthday, The first permanent Image created, the first image of a person, end of WWI, Kodak's first Brownie Camera (1905), Kodachrome film, first digital camera for sale, end of WWII, First Cell Phone camera (2002), First iPhone, Adobe Photoshop Released, daguerreotype, ambrotype, tintype, LIFE magazine begins (1936), National Geographic magazine begins.

First, you will be discussing some of the images we saw in the slide show Monday/Tuesday (you can find the video below). You might want to write this down, because I will be calling on random people to share. With your partner, discuss:

1. Which images stood out to you. Which images caught your attention, and why? (Remember the WHY. What did that image make you think of/imagine/feel?)

2. Pick ONE image you do not know the story behind. Figure out what story this photo tells, and be prepared to summarize this for the class. Pause the slideshow on your photo so we can see it.

3. In the old days, photographs were hard to produce. They took a very long time to take, and they would be printed on precious materials like silver and glass. Now, many images can be produced in a split second. What do you think are some of the effects of this change?

Today we watched a video on the history of the film camera, and answered the following questions as we discussed key points in class:

1. Camera Obscura:
When?:
What?:
2. What was the problem with the first images created with the camera obscura?
3. WHOA! Oldest surviving photograph:
Who? When? What?
4. WHOA! First known photo of a person?
Who? When? What?

5. The glass negative was better than the Daguerrotype because…
6. The Dry plate was important because…
7. How much did the first Kodak Brownie cost?

 8. When did color film really become used?
9. How much did the first DSLR Cost?
10. What year did the first DSLR come out?

Next, we looked at some of the most Iconic Images of all time in the video above.
WARNING: Some images may be disturbing. Photography is such a powerful medium because it can depict realities that can be jarring and emotionally raw. While watching this video, I encourage you to write down those images you are familiar with, and those that you feel "move" you.
