Turning in Layer Masking practice

Today we will finish and turn in both the animal hybrid and the paintbrush pictures.
Run a contact sheet with 1 column and 2 rows.
You can name the contact sheet LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_layer masking.jpg

Each photo will be worth 10 points.
Your final product will look like this:

Turn your finished contact sheet into the appropriate period folder titled "layer masking".

AND: TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN PUZZLE PHOTOS AND SURREALISM WORKSHEETS.

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

As you finish your animals, you can begin your final layer masking practice by having a buddy take your picture of you holding a paintbrush.

We will use layer masking to create the illusion of you painting color on yourself.

1. Import your photo into Photoshop. Fix the levels and boost the saturation a tiny bit.

2. Duplicate the layer by clicking CTRL+J.

3. Turn the layer you just duplicated to black and white by clicking Image--> Adjustments--> Black and white

4. Put a Layer Mask on your black and white layer.

5. Make sure your MASK is selected. Click your brush tool. Find a brush with a paintbrush type texture in your brush menu.

6. Use black paint to "hide" parts of your black and white image, showing color below.

7. Now make sure your black and white image thumbnail is selected (Not the mask). Using a LARGE, soft-edged brush, click the burn tool and softly burn the edges of your image, creating a vignette look like the photo above.

Tuesday

Today we will use layer masking to blend two animals together. No cutting or erasing allowed!

Monday, March 21, 2016

Today's agenda:

Today we will create this house growing out of a tree stump by trying out a technique called layer masking. Layer masking is a way of blending two images together.

Good morning everyone,
I apologize for being gone again. I forgot I had a conference at eCademy today.

You already read a little bit about the popular surrealist painter Magritte. Today you will read a little bit about the most popular surreal painter of all time, the crazy and eccentric Salvador Dali.

FIRST: Before you read anything, do a google image search of "Salvador Dali Paintings". Take a look at the man and his paintings. Formulate an opinion about those paintings and his style in general.

NEXT: Visit the page here: http://thedali.org/timeline/
You can click on the timeline at the bottom of the page to skip around to different decades of his life, and you can click on the pictures to show more facts. Some of your questions will come from the reading and some will come from captions on the pictures. Type your answers in Microsoft WORD.

1900's
1. What was Dali's relationship with his mom and dad like as a child?

1910's
2. When did Dali have his first public exhibition? (Clue: you have to click the pictures to get additional facts)

1920's
3. Who exposed Dali to the world of surrealism?
4. What devastated Dali in 1921?

1930's
5. Who was the psychoanalyst Dali met in 1938?
6. What painting did Dali make in 1931? Make sure to check it out- it's his most popular.
7. Dali made a telephone that looked like what in 1938?

1940's
8. What was Dali's first painting in the US? take a look at it, too.

1950's
9. What types of things did Dali become obsessed with in the 1950's?

1960's
10. What deepening interests were powerfully reflected in his work in the 1960's?

1970's
11. To what did he dedicate his energy in the 1970's?

1980's
12. What happened to Dali in 1984?
13. What was the year and title of his last paining? Take a look at it.
14. What year did Salvador Dali die?

YOUR OPINION
15. What is your opinion of Salvador Dali's work, and WHY? Do you like it or not? Do you think it's creative or off-putting and strange, and why? Can you appreciate the symbolism or would you prefer a more aesthetically pleasing style of paining? Write a short paragraph on what you think.

16. Insert a couple of Salvador Dali paintings that you do like. (Or kind of like, if you hate his work)

Name your document LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_Dali.doc and drop in the surrealism worksheets folder.

I always liked this one :)

Good morning!

Today will be catch up and extra credit opportunities for everyone.

1. Turn in your puzzle photos from last week
2. Complete and turn in your Surrealism documents from yesterday
3. Find an extra credit tutorial here: http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/tutorials/

Extra credit for Quarter 3 will be added TOMORROW after school, so you do have time. Tutorials/projects typically get about 5 points apiece, and you can get up to 20 points. If you do a tutorial, submit the original as well as your finished product.

Monday, March 14, 2016

Good Morning!
First, turn in your Puzzle Photo from last week.

Today you will do a some reading and online research on the topic of SURREALISM.
That will be the topic of our next unit.

1.  Open the document called "Surrealism- Magritte.pdf" on the M:/ You will answer these questions in A WORD DOCUMENT after reading the material shown.
SKIP QUESTION #1 or just use that spot to tell me hello. We have not done layer masking yet (but we will soon).

2. Open the word document called "surrealism" and read the instructions there.
Basically, you will be researching surrealism and looking at pictures. I want you to look around and get ideas. Really look at how other surreal photographers have created interesting things and think about what interesting things you could create, too. You can save a copy of this document and directly insert your pictures and thoughts. You need to find at least 2 as the document states.

Both documents are on the M:/ in the Miss E Folder. Remember, you have to open Microsoft Word first before you can open a document from me.
Our computers like to be difficult sometimes!

Puzzle Photo CHALLENGE

First, turn in your ghost contact sheet to the turn in folder.

If you are finished cutting your puzzle pieces out, try this challenge:

Find a nice, high resolution image of a table and make your puzzle look like it's sitting on the table using Photoshop's lesser known Transform tools. First drag your puzzle onto the desired table image and adjust it's size. It should be on its own layer. Click Edit-->Transform and you see a menu of different options. You can create perspective tricks by using rotate, skew, distort, and perspective.
 Hardest, but most impressive

 A little easier

Definitely easier Easiest, but still looks good

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Good morning everyone!

Since many of you are finished with your ghost photos, I am going to require everyone to make a jigsaw puzzle photo from the tutorial here: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/photoshop-puzzle/

It is a good tutorial BUT you must take in to account a couple of things:
1. They are using a different version of photoshop than you are, so to find the TEXTURIZE filter, you must open up the full filter gallery by clicking the filter menu, and clicking "filter gallery". Now scroll to the bottom of the filter gallery and you'll see it.

2. I have provided the puzzle PSD texture file for you in the miss E folder on the m:/. This is the one you'll use when you click "load texture".

3. You have to remember PEN TOOL. If you don't remember how to use it, I want you to google "how to use photoshop pen tool" and re-teach yourself.

4. Remember, go step by step and don't skip anything. If you're uncertain, ask your neighbor or ask google. Half of being a good student/artist/citizen/whatever is learning to use resources and problem solve!

Monday, March 7, 2016

Good morning everyone!

Today you will be editing your ghost photos and running them into a contact sheet. Here are the steps you should take for each photo:

1. Crop if necessary. Take out large amounts of "dead space"
2. Turn your image black and white by clicking Image--> adjustments--> black and white.
3. Adjust your levels by clicking CTRL L or image-->adjustments--> levels. Adjust the black and white sliders so your image has nice contrast and your ghosts show up well.
4. Extras:
-add a sepia tone by clicking image-->adjustments-->hue and saturation. Click the check box that says "colorize". Slide the hue slider to orange and pull the saturation slider lower. You should get a soft brown vintage effect.
-use the burn tool with a LARGE soft edge brush around the outside of the photos to make the edges dark
-use the sharpen tool to make faces stand out a little more. Remember, only one or two swipes of the brush, or it'll start to look weird.

5. Name these photos anything you like and run a 2 column 3 row contact sheet.  Doublecheck your neighbors contact sheet to make sure you did not use the same photos!

Hey, remember this guy? James Van Der Zee? He was a guy back in the Victorian days who seemed to Photograph ghosts. That was before photoshop! How did that guy do it? You're going to give it a try...

Before you start....

Brainstorm ideas for 5-6 minutes.

Get a tripod OR plan what table/counter you will set your camera on. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WITHOUT A TRIPOD or setting your camera down. Your camera CAN NOT MOVE.

1. Set your ISO to the lowest setting (64).

2. Set your shutter speed to either 6” or 8”, whichever you want to try first.

3. You need at least two models for this, so work with the partner group next to you.

4.  Have one person sit VERY STILL for the whole picture. After you press the shutter release button, wait a couple seconds, then have the other person come in and freeze/pose. Your models MUST be  completely still while the shutter is open or they will be blurry. If it turns out blurry, re-shoot. Keep trying until you get it. (Blurry pictures will automatically drop to a 50% because this tells me you were too lazy to try again.)

If your pictures are coming out too DARK, raise your ISO (because you need your camera to be more sensitive to the light).
If your pictures are coming out too LIGHT, lower your ISO (because you need your camera to be less sensitive to the light).
